Popular South Korean drama “Itaewon Class” debuted on JTBC in January 2020. The series, based on a webtoon of the same name, follows Park Sae-ro-yi (played by Park Seo-Joon), a young man who decides to get revenge on the owner of a food company for the murder of his father and the subsequent ruination of his life. Along the way, he establishes a restaurant in the multiethnic area of Itaewon and draws a varied group of devoted patrons who join him in his fight for justice.
One of the key themes of “Itaewon Class” is the struggle against social inequality and discrimination. Park Sae-ro-yi, expelled from school and spent time in prison, faces numerous obstacles in his pursuit of success and recognition. He is constantly belittled and dismissed by those in positions of power, who see him as a lowly outsider who can never rise above his station. However, he refuses to give up and uses his intelligence, determination, and charisma to prove his worth and win the respect of others.
Another important theme is the power of friendship and teamwork. Park Sae-ro-yi’s success would not have been possible without his friends’ and colleagues’ support and loyalty, who all have unique talents and personalities. Together, they overcome various challenges and obstacles, demonstrating the value of cooperation and mutual trust.
The series also explores issues related to identity and self-discovery. Itaewon is a neighbourhood known for its diverse community, where people from different backgrounds and cultures coexist. Through interactions with his customers and employees, Park Sae-ro-yi learns to appreciate human experiences’ richness and complexity and accept others for who they are, regardless of their differences.
