The VPN retains only anonymous connection logs, including the date of your last connection and your bandwidth usage. What Encryption And VPN Protocols does it provide?

Moreover, ExpressVPN supports multiple VPN protocols, including Lightway, OpenVPN, IKEv2, and L2TP/IPsec, allowing users to select the most suitable option. Lightway is the default option, combining speed with security as it utilizes the wolfSSL library, which is audited and FIPS 140-2 validated. We found that Lightway connected near-instantly and never dropped out, even on networks that sometimes struggle with OpenVPN. The protocol has also been audited for its security on separate occasions. Since the VPN provides high-end encryption and secure protocols, we gave it a 10/10 here.

VPN Leaks and Security Features- how secure is your data?

Additionally, we found that the key security features are present and effective within the VPN. Network Lock, ExpressVPN’s kill switch, is available on both desktop and mobile apps to prevent data leaks in the event of an unexpected VPN connection drop. In our tests, the kill switch worked flawlessly, blocking internet traffic when we simulated a VPN failure and reconnecting seamlessly.

We also performed IP, DNS, and WebRTC leak tests on multiple servers and found zero leaks; our real IP address and DNS requests were always properly masked behind the VPN. ExpressVPN operates its own private, zero-knowledge DNS servers for all queries while connected, providing an extra layer of privacy and preventing DNS leaks.

For advanced security, ExpressVPN offers useful extras, such as a split-tunneling feature that allows you to route select app traffic outside the VPN. There is also a Threat Manager feature that blocks known trackers and malicious sites at the DNS level.

One thing to note is that ExpressVPN does not offer multi-hop (double VPN) servers, unlike some of its competitors. However, given its strong encryption, leak protection, and the numerous independent security audits confirming its safety, we are confident in ExpressVPN’s security. Here, we have deducted only one mark and rated the VPN 9/10.

Streaming with Express VPN

Streaming performance is a major use case for VPNs, and ExpressVPN is a top performer in this category. In our tests, ExpressVPN consistently unblocked all the major streaming services we tried, including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, HBO Max, and Hotstar. We were able to access multiple regional Netflix libraries (including the US, UK, Canada, Japan, Germany, Australia, etc.) without any issues.

Playback was smooth and high-quality: HD and even 4K UHD streams ran without buffering thanks to the VPN’s fast speeds and reliable connections. Not every VPN can evade Netflix’s VPN blocks or other platforms’ proxies, but ExpressVPN works with virtually every streaming service we’ve ever tried, outperforming even other top providers in breadth of access.

In our weekly streaming tests, ExpressVPN consistently performed well over time without requiring server switches or support contact.

Another advantage for streamers is ExpressVPN’s MediaStreamer feature (Smart DNS). This is included and allows you to unblock streaming content on devices that don’t support VPN apps (such as gaming consoles, Apple TV, or smart TVs) by using ExpressVPN’s DNS servers. MediaStreamer doesn’t encrypt traffic, but it’s a useful add-on for accessing geo-blocked media on big screens. Overall, ExpressVPN’s impeccable streaming success rate and performance earned it a 10/10 in streaming.

Is ExpressVPN reliable for Torrenting? 

ExpressVPN advertises full P2P support on all servers, and our tests confirm it’s a torrent-friendly VPN suitable for safe and fast torrenting. We downloaded a 1 GB test torrent using qBittorrent while connected to various ExpressVPN servers and observed excellent performance.

Download speeds were among the fastest of any VPN we’ve tested, which is consistent with the strong speed results. For example, a file of ~6 GB downloaded over ExpressVPN was retrieved quickly when connected to a nearby high-speed server.

There are no bandwidth limits or throttling on P2P traffic, and since every server allows torrenting, you don’t have to worry about switching to special “P2P servers”. We also checked for IP and DNS leaks during torrenting sessions, and, no leaks were detected, ensuring anonymity while downloading.

Security-wise, ExpressVPN covers the essentials for torrent users. The kill switch (Network Lock) prevents your real IP from being exposed if the VPN disconnects mid-download, which is crucial during potentially lengthy torrent sessions. Moreover, the built-in obfuscation by the VPN helps bypass VPN blocks and censorship.

However, ExpressVPN lacks a couple of advanced torrenting features. For example, Port forwarding is not directly supported through the regular apps, unlike some VPNs that let you open a port to potentially improve seeding or tracker connectivity. ExpressVPN allows port forwarding only if you set it up on a compatible router (or use their Aircove router), but for the average user using the app, this feature isn’t available.

Additionally, ExpressVPN does not offer a SOCKS5 proxy service, which some torrent users employ with their client. In practice, we found ExpressVPN’s speeds and privacy to be more than adequate for safe torrenting, even without these additional features. It also successfully unblocked torrent sites that were blocked by our ISP on our test network. With strong performance and solid privacy, ExpressVPN earns a score of 9/10 for Torrenting.

ExpressVPN has an extensive global network, offering servers in 105 countries and over 160 city locations.. With over 3,000 servers in total, the network strikes a good balance between quantity and quality. ExpressVPN’s servers are strategically distributed worldwide, meaning users can find a nearby server almost anywhere for optimal performance. Popular regions offer a wide range of options; for example, there are numerous locations across Europe. This broad presence translates to faster speeds and lower latency for users globally, as well as more content unblocking options. In our tests, having servers in 105 countries allowed us to reliably bypass geo-restrictions for a wide range of locales and services.

Moreover, all ExpressVPN servers run on RAM-only infrastructure (diskless) due to TrustedServer tech, which improves security and means data is not stored long-term. We also appreciate that the server software is standardized and tightly maintained by ExpressVPN, which reduces the likelihood of misconfiguration. In terms of transparency, ExpressVPN no longer publishes an exact server count, but the “over 3000” figure has remained roughly consistent, and our experience with congestion or capacity was uniformly positive. During peak usage times, we did not encounter slowdowns, suggesting the servers are not overloaded.

ExpressVPN utilizes some virtual server locations for a select number of countries. But these are clearly indicated on their website. The vast majority of locations we tested are physical and performed as expected. ExpressVPN doesn’t categorize its servers by specialty, which keeps the interface simple. Every server we tried supported all activities such as torrenting, streaming, and gaming without issue. Considering the breadth of coverage, solid performance, and secure setup, we give ExpressVPN’s Server Network a 9/10.

Speed and Latency- how fast is ExpressVPN?

Speed is often the make-or-break factor for VPNs, and ExpressVPN proved to be one of the fastest VPNs we’ve ever tested. Using a 100 Mbps base connection, ExpressVPN achieved outstanding results. On average, download speeds only dropped by around 7% when connected, and uploads by about 2%, meaning we still retained ~93 Mbps or more out of 100 Mbps downstream. In practical terms, this slight drop is barely noticeable, allowing high-bandwidth activities such as 4K streaming, large downloads, and online gaming with virtually no slowdown. In fact, ExpressVPN’s proprietary Lightway protocol delivered “blazing-fast connection speeds” in our tests. Even though many competitors rely on the WireGuard protocol for speed, ExpressVPN’s Lightway showed equally impressive results. Connections were not only fast but also very stable, with low latency.

We tested servers across North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia, and ExpressVPN consistently maintained high throughput across all regions. However, CyberGhost doesn’t support port forwarding, which could affect seeding efficiency slightly, and there’s no SOCKS5 proxy if you prefer proxy configuration inside your torrent client. But honestly, for most users, these aren’t deal-breakers. Everything worked seamlessly using just the VPN.

During our hands-on experience, this massive network paid off. Anytime a connection felt even slightly slow, switching to a nearby server fixed it right away. We appreciated the server-specific labeling in the app streaming, torrenting, gaming, and even the enhanced privacy “NoSpy” servers. These categories took the guesswork out of finding the right connection for specific tasks.

The NoSpy servers deserve a special shoutout. Located in Romania and run entirely by CyberGhost’s own team instead of third-party operators, they’re built for privacy-conscious users who need a little extra assurance. In our tests, they offered excellent speeds and a reassuring level of control, especially for those dealing with sensitive information.

CyberGhost is also stepping up its security game with RAM-only servers and an increasing number of colocated machines. This means less reliance on third-party data centers and no permanent storage of data. While there are a few virtual locations included, they’re clearly labeled, and we didn’t encounter any issues while using them.

Speed and Latency

Let’s be real, slow VPNs are the quickest way to ruin your internet experience. Luckily, CyberGhost doesn’t let you fall into that trap. In fact, during our tests on a 250 Mbps base connection, it delivered some seriously solid results across the board. Using the WireGuard protocol, we often clocked over 200 Mbps when connecting to nearby servers. For instance, our East Coast connection to a New York server reached around 225 Mbps, while a hop over to London came in slightly higher at about 230 Mbps. Even far-off locations like Hong Kong stayed impressively fast, averaging close to 175 Mbps.

Ping times also stayed comfortably low on nearby servers, which is great news for gamers. We saw only a small increase in latency. For example, from 20ms to around 30ms, so performance remained sharp and responsive. Even during network switches or waking devices from sleep, CyberGhost reconnected quickly, especially with IKEv2 on mobile.

The cherry on top? No signs of throttling, even during peak usage hours. Speeds were consistent day and night. Overall, CyberGhost nails it on speed and latency it keeps up with whatever you throw at it and doesn’t break a sweat. We’re happy to give it a 10/10 in this category.
