General overview

ZenMate is a budget-friendly and easy-to-use VPN service perfect for beginners. The VPN is based in German jurisdiction (14-eyes member) and has a vague no-logs policy. It offers trustable security protocols and features but doesn’t compete with the best VPN services. The VPN performs well for streaming and downloading torrents. It unblocks Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and BBC iPlayer and has a few optimised servers for streaming purposes. ZenMate’s overall speeds are disappointing. It provides slow speeds on both short and long-distance servers.

ZenMate is available to download on all major platforms like Windows, Mac, IOS, Android, and Wi-Fi routers. You can use unlimited devices under one subscription plan. Apart from the VPN service, the company also sells Business VPNs with management support and a dashboard. Moreover, Torrenting is allowed, but it isn’t recommended due to low-security features and underwhelming speeds.

Score 5.5

Security

ZenMate provides pretty basic security protocols and features. It uses industry-standard protocols like IKEv2/IPSec and OpenVPN (TCP/UDP). Also, a state-of-art protocol like WireGuard is offered by the service provider. ZenMate protects your data with unhackable AES-256 encryption and comes with the essential kill-switch feature. The VPN doesn’t leak any DNS, IPv6, and WebRTC data that could compromise your safety. With advanced features, the VPN doesn’t provide any extra privacy-enhancing features except Ad-blocker.

While you can enjoy the most secure OpenVPN protocol on both Windows and Android by default, Mac and IOS devices are limited to the IKEv2 protocol. If you are an Apple user, you must manually set up to use OpenVPN or WireGuard protocol. Moreover, WireGuard is accessible on Android only.

Score 5.5

Speed

ZenMate delivers underwhelming speeds on both local and international servers. The VPN records a 50% to 55% speed drop on local servers, which is significantly low. You might experience slow browsing activities, unwanted buffering, and terrible gaming performance.

Longer-distance speeds of ZenMate are also unsatisfying. Connecting to US, Australia, or Singapore servers from a base location in London, may result in up to 90% loss in both download and upload speeds. However, it is unclear, but VPN service performs well when connected to German servers dropping only 9% internet speeds.

Overall, the VPN provides below-par speeds. It is convenient for web browsing, but torrenting or streaming activities would be challenging to perform when using the ZenMate VPN service.

Score 9.1

Servers

ZenMate runs an extensive server network of 4800 servers in 81 countries. There aren’t any city-level servers; instead, the VPN itself selects the fastest server location for you. The VPN’s servers are well spread across the globe. It covers all continents, and most servers operate in Europe and North America.

Additionally, the VPN does well when it comes to streaming. It has few optimised servers for streaming services, Although the service unblocks Netflix, BBC iPlayer, HBO NOW, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, and more.

While all servers allow P2P traffic with few dedicated servers for torrenting activities, the VPN effectively hides your data through its kill switch and other safety features. However, the VPN suffers due to a lack of speed, and its no-logs policy is discomforting.

Score 6.4

Support

ZenMate ticks all the boxes when it comes to customer support. It positively responds to after-sales service and provides various helping features to address customers’ problems.

It offers a 24/7 live chat option with knowledgeable and efficient technical staff. Also, the service offers tons of articles regarding setup, troubleshooting, browser extensions, and more. Additionally, the service provides online resources that aren’t detailed and out-of-date. ZenMate also provides email support. Difficult questions are automatically directed to technical staff. This service is a bit slow but provides practical and in-depth answers to the customers.
